Discussions about medical marijuana have skyrocketed recently. Especially now that it has been legalized in Canada and various U.S. States, its health benefits have been a hot topic.

Aside from being helpful in the treatment of various conditions, cannabis is making a buzz in the beauty business by being included in the ingredients of different makeup products.

Cannabidiol or CBD, a non-psychoactive chemical found in marijuana, is being used by some brands in making different beauty products like mascaras and moisturizers.

Products which contain only minute amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can be sold legally in the market. THC is the compound found in cannabis which is responsible for the “high” felt by its consumers.

Brightfield Group, a company which specializes in the market research of cannabis and CBD, claimed that it is the “next hot; functional beauty ingredient” and even compared its possible impacts to the beauty industry as that of aloe and shea butter.

The industry of CBD is predicted to have an approximate value of $22bn in the year 2022 as a result of the increasing interest for its cosmetics, medicinal, and recreational uses.

Last September 2018, a French beauty company called Sephora introduced “High Beauty,” their first cannabis-infused cosmetic line. The brand launched “High Expectations,” a facial oil and “High Five,” a facial moisturizer initially. Both products are infused with cannabis essences.

The founder of High Beauty, Melissa Jochim, emphasized the change in the perception shifted cannabis from a recreational drug to a beneficial wellness product. She also added how it had not been conventionally accepted until people started to perceive it as an ingredient for lifestyle and wellbeing.

In addition to Sephora, Estee Lauder is also another big beauty company that has released a cannabis-infused line in early 2018 with “Origins.”. In their website, Estee Lauder made a claim about their ingredients being 100 percent natural and only using “the highest grade, locally grown cannabis and marijuana”.

WHIO-TV, a news station in Ohio, started research about the CBD-containing cosmetic products that are being sold all over America. During their investigation, the team found out that most of these products come with confident claims that CBD has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which helps in the improvement of skin condition and wrinkles and even thicken the eyelashes to some extent.

Dr. Gregory Samano, a family doctor from Florida, assured the audience of the news station that the topical products do not have the ability to make you high due to the absence of the psychoactive components. He even expressed his own excitement in the possible developments and its progress over time.
